Renting part or all of your unit to someone else while your own lease stays in force. In practice most leases require written landlord permission first. It does not mean you are off the hook — in a sublet you normally remain responsible to the landlord for rent and damage, unlike an assignment.

What can I do if this comes up?
Read the lease for a sublet clause and ask the landlord for written permission before anyone moves in. Sign a written sublease with the subtenant that covers rent, the dates, and damage. Remember that you usually stay responsible to the landlord for rent and damage while the sublet lasts.
