Formally giving the rental back to the landlord, ending the tenancy. In practice it usually means returning the keys and confirming in writing that you have moved out. It does not mean simply leaving: without a clear, documented handover, rent can keep accruing and your deposit clock may never start.
Why does this matter to renters?
Doing it properly — keys returned, forwarding address given — protects your deposit and closes your obligations.
What does this look like in practice?
Returning the keys and moving out by the agreed date is a surrender of the premises.
What can I do if this comes up?
When you hand the unit back, return every key, photograph the empty rooms, and ask the landlord to confirm in writing the date they accepted the surrender. That confirmation matters if the landlord later claims rent for time after you left.
