Notice to cure

Definition

A written notice giving a renter the chance to fix a lease violation before a landlord takes further action. In practice it is an opportunity, and documenting what you fixed matters. It does not mean you are being evicted — a cure notice comes before any court filing, and fixing the problem in time usually ends it.

Why does this matter to renters?

Understanding it helps you respond in time and avoid escalation to eviction.

What does this look like in practice?

A notice to cure might give you time to remove an unauthorized pet or pay overdue rent.

What can I do if this comes up?

Read the notice for the exact problem and the deadline to fix it. If the violation is real, fix it and send the landlord written proof before the deadline. If it is not, respond in writing with your evidence. Either way, keep the notice and call legal aid, because what happens next can lead to an eviction case.
