A written notice that a tenancy is ending, given by either a renter or a landlord depending on the situation. In practice the form, the delivery method and the timing all come from your lease and local rules. It does not mean a court has ordered you out — that is a separate step with its own process.
Why does this matter to renters?
The required timing and form are set by your state and lease; getting them right protects you.
What does this look like in practice?
A month-to-month tenant often gives a written notice to vacate before moving.
What can I do if this comes up?
If you are giving one, send it in writing in the form your lease and state require and keep a dated copy. If you received one, photograph it, note how it was delivered, and compare it with your state page before you move. A notice is not a court order, and legal aid can tell you whether it is valid.
