Rent Receipt Request Letter

Page last updated: August 22, 2026 · How we source & update

What it's for

A written request asking your landlord to provide receipts or a payment history for the rent you've paid.

Educational — information, not legal advice, and not attorney-reviewed.

When to use it

Use this when you need documented proof of your rent payments — for a rental history, a dispute, or a benefits application, for example — and your landlord hasn't been providing receipts.

What to include

  • Your name, the rental address, and the date
  • A request for receipts or a written payment history covering the period you specify
  • The reason you need the documentation, if you choose to share it
  • Your preferred format for receiving it, such as paper, email, or through the app
  • A reasonable deadline for the response, consistent with your state's rules
  • A note that you'll keep your own payment records going forward

What to attach or keep

  • Your own bank statements, money orders, or payment app records
  • Any prior rent receipts you already have
  • Lease terms showing your rent amount and due date
  • Any earlier requests for receipts and your landlord's response

Before you send

  • Check whether your state requires landlords to provide receipts, using the app
  • Keep the request simple and specific about the time period you need
  • Send it using a method that gives you proof of delivery, and keep a dated copy
  • Let Renter Shield generate and customize this request, and track the response deadline

The letter

Everything in [square brackets] is yours to replace. Nothing is sent anywhere from this page — edit it here, copy it, and send it yourself however your lease says notices are given.

Deliberately no deadlines or dollar figures. Those are set by your state, city and lease, so this letter leaves them to you — your state page carries the sourced rule and its review status. This wording is a general-purpose draft, is not attorney-reviewed, and is information, not legal advice.

You can type directly in the box. Your edits stay in this browser tab and are not saved or transmitted.

When NOT to use this letter

  • You are behind on rent and being asked to pay. Get the ledger, but also get advice — a request for receipts does not pause a notice period.
  • You need this for a court date this week. Ask the court self-help desk how to request records formally; a letter may be too slow.
  • You have the records already. Reconstruct your own ledger from bank or money-order records first — it is often faster and equally good evidence.

Sending it and keeping the record

Sending. Send in writing so the request itself is dated. Keep your own parallel ledger regardless of whether you get a reply.

Keeping. Keep: your own payment ledger, bank or money-order stubs, portal screenshots, this request, delivery proof, and whatever the landlord provides.

Status of this wording: general-purpose draft, written by Renter Shield, not attorney-reviewed, no statutory deadline or dollar figure asserted. Rules vary by state, city, housing type and lease. Last updated September 3, 2026. Something wrong? Tell us.
